Pre-K Gymnastics: Learning to Listen

One thing that we occasionally hear from parents of newer pre-k gymnasts is, “I’m so sorry, she just isn’t listening very well.  Maybe she’s not ready for group classes?”  Well, not having perfect listening skills at this age is right on target, and our coaches are totally prepared for that and are happy to help your little one develop their listening skills. Here are a few examples of how our coaches help get pre-k athletes on board with improving their listening (without them even knowing that they are learning):

Verbal and Visual Cues:  Our Pre-K Coaches employ a combination of verbal instructions and visual demonstrations.  This dual approach not only caters to different learning styles but also helps children associate words with actions.  Over time, this repetition and association help in reinforcing listening skills.  Sequential Instructions:  Instructors often break down movements into sequential steps, making it easier for young learners to follow along.  By repeating these step-by-step instructions, children gradually learn to listen for specific cues and understand the order of movements required.  Active Engagement and Reinforcement:  Through interactive games and activities, children are encouraged to practice listening to instructions amidst the excitement of physical activity.  Additionally, positive reinforcement for following instructions helps reinforce these listening behaviors.

Pre-K Gymnastics classes serve as more than just a platform for physical activity; they act as an opportunity for overall child development.  Parents should never feel embarrassed about their Pre-K athlete having a tough time listening – they are still learning, and our coaches are all understanding that listening is just another skill they are practicing.  With a patient, experienced, and understanding coach, you will be amazed at how your child’s listening skills improve from one month to the next.
